House on Fairfax

Featuring timeless detailing, standout modern accents, and thoughtful delineation of public and private spaces, this home presents as a statement piece within the context of its Birmingham neighborhood. Two strong gable projections define its outward personality and emphasize the front entry, while a neutral palette, full divided-lite windows, and bronze metal accents unite the exterior. Decorative corbels add traditional interest blended with a modern hint through elevational asymmetries.

Inside, the framed entry vestibule offers a moment of pause, before opening to the main foyer space and its staircase as a striking focal point. The sweeping formal stair serves as an opening gesture, circling the main foyer of the home, linking the more public main level and the private living spaces above. The wall-to-wall windows above the stair let in ample natural light, and the simple material palette of neutral walls and warm wood tones offers a complementary relationship with the dramatic gestures of the foyer and stairway, softening the experience of the space. Progressing through the entry vestibule, the large kitchen showcases traditional stylings mixed with modern finishes, echoing the stylistic themes of the home in its most-used gathering point. The central island is intimate enough for a family breakfast, while providing enough space to entertain a party of friends. The open great room nearby also connects to the rear lanai, while serving as the base of the home’s living spaces with its vaulted ceiling, full-height stone fireplace, and space for ample seating. Whether inside or outside, thoughtful moments and careful delineation of spaces make the home cohesive and liveable.

Upstairs, the primary suite serves as a contrasting private bookend to the living spaces of the main level; the interior spaces progress from elegant and public with views of the neighborhood, to more comfortable and private with views of the backyard. With its layered spaces that unfold from exterior to interior, the home is designed to fit the changing daily needs of our clients’ family, from a busy Christmas with the extended family to a quiet Sunday morning with the kids.
