House on the Hill

Designed as a timeless home for an active family, this Birmingham residence thoughtfully balances the rhythms of modern living with carefully considered materials and refined transitional detailing. Sited on a prominent street near downtown, the home presents an architectural language that is both distinctive and enduring.

A neutral, highly textured overgrouted stone, sleek dark vertical siding, and large divided-lite windows balance traditional and modern-leaning elements on the exterior. The warm neutrals and solid forms of the architectural materials contrast with the tones and organic shapes of the landscaping, softening the transition between the home and the existing streetscape. Two strong gable projections define the exterior character of the home, with the gesture of the radiused porch entry between them. At the front entry, the architectural detailing becomes more concentrated and expressive. A custom, radiused door and matching entry profile establish a focal point and elevate the arrival experience, while intentionally framing the view in anticipation of the living areas beyond. Subtle yet intentional elements - standing seam metal roof accents, curved roof overhang details, a radiused wing wall framing a statement lantern, brass accent lights that reference the proportions of the front entry, and a sculptural metal rain chain - provide custom, thoughtful distinction. Inside, the living spaces of the home define the main level, with the more private spaces upstairs.

Our clients – extensive world travelers with an inclination for design – were dedicated to creating an enduring home for their family that was well-considered and deeply personal. Much of the interior reflects collected moments from their time abroad, weaving together years spent living in countries around the globe. Their dedication to the process and commitment to a holistic vision of the design was essential in making the home a special place for their family to live and grow.
