Downtown Cottage-Style

On an infill lot in downtown Rochester, this residential home was designed to blend our empty-nester clients’ new residence into their neighborhood’s charming streetscape. Exterior detailing references historic Rochester vernacular, while maintaining the functionality of a modern family home. Making the living spaces generous enough for extended family gatherings and yet properly sized for the day-to-day routines of two people emphasized the need for well-proportioned zones to make the home always comfortable.

The sweeping roofline embraces the wraparound front porch and integrates a common thread of radiused design moves via the oval window above the arched front door and roof accent above, enhancing its architectural charm. The stained beadboard ceilings of the porch provide contrast to the light board-and-batten and neutral stone skirting below. Ultimately, the eye is drawn to the inviting entry door, with its stained finish and textured glass insets, welcoming guests into the foyer. Once inside, maximizing natural light while maintaining privacy was a primary objective, and circulation throughout the home was carefully designed to create intentional spaces. Thoughtful semi-private zones are the focus for day-to-day life, with flexibility in public areas for generous entertainment when extended family visits. The design relies on a careful delineation of spaces from the front to the back of the home, forgoing an open plan to maintain a more intimate atmosphere.

Completed in 2025, the cottage-style home feels updated and relevant to today, while borrowing motifs from the early 20th century to create a timeless architectural statement. The emphasis on thoughtful zones on the exterior that extend the main interior living spaces speaks to our client’s desire for their home to be always liveable, whether just together, with family, or a group of friends.
